The Bambusoideae (bamboos) is one of the largest subfamilies of the grass family (Poaceae) with some 1,700 documented species. Many bamboo species are economically, ecologically and culturally important. Apart from the multi-omics datasets, the BambooBase is also a one-stop knowledge base which provides inclusive, integrative and cross-referenced information on the currently accepted 135 genera, with their scientific name, protologue, synonym(s), type species, morphological description, geographic distribution and phylogenetic remarks. In addtion, related research articles, photos, species covered within each genus, and other information, are also provided when available. Generic information is currently being supplemented and refined by global specialists. Following the steps of the Bamboo Phylogeny Group (BPG) initiated in 2005, BPG II is a new, international cooperative endeavor with over 40 bamboo systematists from 16 countries. The goal of BPG II is to use both genome-scale DNA sequece data and mophorlogical characters to reconstruct a bamboo tree of life at the generic level, to serve as a base for a stable classification of bamboo genera.
